Swallow Nest

Dry spring weather is a disaster for these migrants who need soft mud to make their nests. Swallows will readily adopt these durable nesting bowls that closely resemble the nests they build themselves

Swallows are popular birds and are regarded as the bringers of good luck. They feed on flying insects such as swarms of greenfly, crane flies, mosquitoes and houseflies. They prefer to hunt in the immediate vicinity of their nesting sites.
Period spent by swallows in Central Europe: Arrival at end of March through to April, departure end of July through to early October.
Breeding period: Eggs are laid from the end of April though to mid-July. They will typically have two broods annually, occasionally three

Swallow nest positioning

Although Swallows are sociable birds, the nests should not be placed directly adjacent to one another but at intervals of approximately 1m. Inside buildings of all kinds, porches, livestock sheds, barns, etc. Always ensure unobstructed access through open windows and skylights. Distance between top of nest and ceiling at least 6 cm.
Cleaning the swallow nest is not absolutely necessary but recommended. Cleaning is very simple due to the bowl-shaped nest
